PERSONALITY
DISORDER
Mental disorder in which you have a rigid & unhealthy pattern of thinking, functioning & behaving.
Your path to recovery starts with acceptance.
OCPD?
OCPD, or Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder, or Anankastic Personality Disorder, is a Cluster C personality disorder categorized by impairments in personality (self and interpersonal), functioning & the presence of pathological personality traits. The current criteria for a diagnosis would require significant impairments in personality functioning in regards to identity and/or self-direction and impairments in interpersonal functioning in regards to empathy and/or intimacy.
What does this mean?
In short, if you struggle with perfectionism, preoccupation with orderliness, control issues, list-making, inflexibility, over-adherence to rules, over-conscientious, hoarding, being miserly, rigidity & stubbornness, you are exhibiting maladaptive traits that may lead to an OCPD diagnosis. To break it down even further, if you are a perfectionist who sees the world in black and white, it may be time to acknowledge that there is more going on than you realize. Exhibiting these traits doesn’t constitute a diagnosis. There are many other disorders that share a comorbidity with OCPD, and there are other mental health issues that share similar symptoms.
Important…why?
Low estimates put the number of people suffering from OCPD at 1% of the general population in the United States. Yet most people have never even heard the acronym OCPD. Living with this disorder can lead to depression and anxiety disorders, and people with Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder have higher than average suicide and divorce rates. Living with this personality disorder can be very isolating. So what now? If you or a loved one suspects there is more going on than just a higher-than-average rigidity or perfectionist mentality, please book an appointment with a trained mental health professional. A formal diagnosis will go a long way toward putting you on the path to recovery.
